The Story Behind the Name
Original Cost: $30,282,609
Opened: 1995
Dublin Scioto High School acquired its name from the Scioto River. The Scioto River, which begins in Auglaize county in west-central Ohio, flows southeast past Dublin, Columbus, Circleville and Chillicothe before it joins with the Ohio River at Portsmouth after a 237-mile-long journey. The name Scioto is speculated to come from the Iroquoian word for โdeer.โ Ohioโs chief transportation system in its early years of statehood was its water routes. Lake Erie and the Ohio River provided for passage through our state, and the many rivers, including the Scioto, provided for travel into the interior portions of Ohio.
The Dublin Scioto mascot is the Irish and some notable alumni include: Nick Goings โ96, former NFL fullback for the Carolina Panthers, Jay Richardson โ02, former NFL defensive end, Tamara Witmer โ02, model, Eric Brunner โ04, MLS defender for the Houston Dynamo, Sean Kuraly (K-11th grade, 1998-2009), hockey player for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Bradley McDougald โ09, NFL safety for the Seattle Seahawks, Deji Olatoye โ09, NFL cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons, Eric Stamets โ09, baseball player in the Cleveland Indians organization, Reilly Hickey โ15, film producer, won a Tony Award in 2018 for her role in the production of โOnce on this Island.โ
